VA HISA Benefit

The little-known Home Improvements & Structural Alterations benefit pays for medically necessary modifications to your primary residence.

Eligibility Requirements
  • 1Veteran with a service-connected disability, OR a non-service-connected disability with specific criteria
  • 2Modifications must be medically necessary and prescribed by a VA clinician
  • 3Annual income limits apply for non-service-connected claims

These requirements are summarized for this program. If you meet them, continue to the overview and application steps below.

Program Overview

The Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) program provides grants for medically necessary home modifications for veterans with service-connected or non-service-connected disabilities. Unlike the larger SAH/SHA grants, HISA is available to a broader group of veterans and can cover improvements like ramps, door widening, and accessible bathroom modifications.

How to Apply
  1. 1Obtain a medical prescription from your VA clinician detailing the needed modifications
  2. 2Submit VA Form 10-0103 (HISA application) to your VA medical center's prosthetics department
  3. 3Obtain contractor estimates; VA pays the contractor directly upon approval
